Charge = Expense. I understand that a company calls an expense a charge when they
believe that it will be non-recurring. This is however, IMHO, just a smokescreen.

You still don't get it. Yes, a charge is a loss, but it's a loss over a long course of investment. We're talking about quarterly earnings and its effect on the stock prices. The fact that a charge is non-recurrent and it typically becomes known before a quarter report makes it a non-event.
