OT - Picture looks more like a Coopers Hawk. Rounded tail feather. Coopers are all over SoCal. I've observed them nailing tree rats in my backyard and other small birds. Pretty brave to go for a dog. Perhaps the dog was flushing other smaller animals and the hawk was just utilizing the opportunity. Nice birds.
