Tap dancing around racial hatred

I'm disappointed that Barack Obama didn't sever all ties to his controversial pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Instead, Obama made some half-baked, mealy mouthed statements today. He asked us to understand Wright's life experiences and the context in which he made the despicable remarks.

Excuse me. Racial prejudice -- and certainly racial hatred -- is still alive and inexcusable. But Wright can't behind racism and make racist remarks. He has said the U.S. brought the 9-11 attacks on itself because of corrupt foreign policy, called America the "No. 1 killer in the world" and said "we believe in white supremarcy and black inferiority ... more than we believe in God."

Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth deserves condemnation for sticking by plans to honor Wright.

Brite's president, Newell Williams, uses the same crutch phrases that Obama did.

"As a historian, I think that the particular setting and moment and audience and issues to which a speech is directed ... are critical for understanding any particular text."

Please. Have some conviction and denounce racism whatever its source.
