Would it also be 'unreasonable' for America to act in her own best interests?

Depends on what our interests are and what we do in order to achieve or defend them. Generally acting in our own best interests is reasonable, but it doesn't mean that every action we might possibly take in our own interest is reasonable.

Trying to control the world to the extent that you apparently envision would not be reasonable, and considering the likely reactions of others it probably wouldn't even be in our interests.
