All -

My reading of the Sony/Fuji announcement leads me to conclude the following:

1 - Sony is to develop the drive, and Fuji to supply the media. Iomega is not involved in any way.

2 - It is a completely new drive, using both 3.5" standard floppies and the new 200 MB media.

3 - Sony is looking for broad industry support for this new drive, and they will probably not produce it unless they get the support.

4 - The maximum transfer rate of the drive is specified, but that alone doesn't really tell the story, performance-wise. Not enough data to start making comparisons.

5 - Sony probably doesn't even have prototypes working yet. They say that they will be talking about broad specifications at Comdex. Again, it appears that their goal at this time is to guage industry support.

6 - In the computer biz, products always make it to market much later than when they are first announced, especially if those products rely on totally new technologies.

BTW, I can't see why it would benefit Sony for Iomega to produce 200MB disks. Nor do I recall any mentions in any conference call of Sony pressuring Iomega to do so. Sony would like to own the technology for the next standard floppy. Who wouldn't?

Also, somebody said that LS-120 disks aren't the same size as 1.44MB floppies. Not true. They are exactly the same physical size. I would expect these new theoretical 200MB floppies to also be that size.
