I don't like hypocrisy either.

OTOH sometimes "Hypocrisy is a tribute that vice pays to virtue." It at least shows the idea that there really are standards to try to live up to rather than "its ok if I cheat, steal, lie, etc. The alternative to hypocrisy might not be moral action, but rather shameless immorality. (Of course its not like you have to choose, you can "want nothing to do" with either type of person)

Hypocrisy is odious, but its often less odious than the underlying crime. It should be condemned, but sometimes it draws all the attention when the underlying crime or sin is considered no big deal.

I suppose one thing about condemning the hypocrisy is that its uncontroversial. To condemn the underlying crime or sin you have to assert that there is such an underlying crime or sin, and in some cases many will argue that the dubious actions aren't really wrong.
