I feel fortunate to have joined the military and left, never to seriously look back. Anyone stuck in the inner city can do this today, provided they play by the rules and are willing to work hard.

Well said. Military service does offer a realistic way out.

My father, a WWII Vet, used the GI Bill, to educate himself and later to buy his first home nothing down.

His brothers did the same then or after serving in Korea.

The GI Bill paid for my BA, and enabled me to purchase my first home with zero down AND a lower than market interest rate.
