Eric, I like Solar thermal too, but you need something else anywhere there are clouds. Those parabolic reflectors are aimed at and track the sun to collect and focus the energy. Clouds make that impractical. Dispersion is not a problem for PV although the clouds also attenuate the energy by reflection and absorption.

Solar Thermal is for deserts: Western US, Spain, Israel and North Africa. It can be transmitted northwards. Cheaper PVs would be good for Texas and the US South.
