If every vendor pursues their own "thing" in terms of enhancements, it is great news for all of the CPU stock holders. If the new instructions get support from MS (which appears likely, based on the press releases which have come out today), we are looking at a situation where eventually all the companies will x-licence the technology to each other (i.e. Cyrix licence to AMD and IDTI and vice-versa). In return they will all licence to Intel in exchange for whatever they want from Intel (Slot 1 & 2 compatability likely).
