In this case, it's more a matter of how the information is being used. The tapes are being presented as if they represent all of Rev. Wrights sermons, with the implication that Obama has been sitting in that church every Sunday for the past twenty years listening to this kind of crap.

Furthermore, though Obama himself has made his own views very clear, writing not one but two books, and making countless speeches, he is being made out to be a black supremacist because of some things his pastor has said.

I agree with you that it may not rise to the level of true swiftboating, since there's a kernel of actual fact at the center of the controversy. Wright did say those things, after all, and it's understandable how people could find such statements offensive. But certainly a lot of the reactions of Obama's detractors have been beyond the pale.
