Pat Gelsinger was telling journalists that the Tigerton Xeon MP processor is gaining market share and will bring “the biggest market share swing in years”.

No big surprise there. Tulsa was a dud, and Tigerton
is not.

The stupid thing is that AMD didn't foresee this and
react by dropping the price of 4S opterons to a very
small premium over 2S opterons (20% or less) in an
effort to move the sweet spot of the industry over
to 4S servers.

When it's 4th and long, you don't try to run up the middle.

Intel wasn't ready with a response to very cheap 4S
volume skus. An AMD move like that could have set up
a situation where a 4S server with one set of disks,
one set of network interfaces etc. could have been cheaper
than a pair of 2S servers it would have replaced. So
AMD could have carved out a sizable niche until Intel
turned its ship around.

Instead, AMD tried to keep the prices up for as long as
they could. And that time is over. And the result is
not going to look pretty. Assuming Gelsinger knows what
he's talking about, that's a good amount of profit simply
gone. Anyone want to estimate how much?
