Defrocked - Re: " BTW, what is the origin of the expression "tape out"?

Since about the mid 1970s, integrated circuit layout has been done on computers with CAD (Computer Aided Design) software.

Once the design is complete, verified, simulated and Design Rules are checked, the design is "fractured" from a CAD geometry configuration to a data base format (used to be GDS II) and written to a 9 inch reel of 1/2 inch tape.

This tape, or collection of tapes, is then "sent out" (forwarded) to a reticle maker who mounts the tape on his tape reader, reads in the tap to his computer/CAD system and begins to generate a series of reticles (masks) which have one pattern, or layer, on each reticle. There may be 20 or 25 of these reticles for very complex processes. A very expensive electron beam writer (MEBES) or laser beam writer is used to write the "image" on each reticle.

Hence, the term "tape out"
