One comment, though. Barry McCaferty (sp?) the former general and drug czar, was on one of the cable networks yesterday arguing that the US would pull most the troops out of Iraq in 09 regardless of who wins.

That is exactly my view as well. McCain might take a bit longer to withdraw than Obama or Clinton, but I dont see much difference in the end result. Republican support is going to collapse if we get a surge in violence. In '06, it could be argued that we needed to try one last tactic to try and rescue Iraq. If the resulting drop in violence had also seen concurrent progress on the political front, it might even have worked. However, the fact that the Iraqi politicians couldnt take advantage of the surge is going to shift a portion of the blame onto them. That will be enough to get some of the fence sitters to support withdrawal into bases.

From a foreign policy standpoint, I am more likely to base my vote on their moves with respect to Iran or elsewhere than I am on Iraq. I think the facts on the ground are going to take away most of the options for whoever is President.
