Lane brought up gullibility, but I think what we see in the black community is really the opposite- faulty conclusions which are the result of a virulent sense of cynicism, and a feeling (among some) that white America is completely against black America.

Now white Americans can point to all the gains black Americans have made, but it's all about perception- and perception truly is reality. Black Americans and white Americans do not always share the same perceptions of "progress". Anyone who read Malcolm X, and followed the progression of the more militant strains of black thought, should have known this was still a very powerful meme in the black community. That so many white Americans are ignorant of what goes on in the black community pretty much (imo) reinforces the idea that not as much "progress" has been made as whites thought. Ignorance of a community's anger and discontent does not equal "progress", in other words.
