I really don't know if Sony has prototypes of the new drive or not. Actually, reading your quote of the press release again, I'm not sure. But the important words in the release are "said they would propose the system's basic specifications to personal computer and computer drive makers" at Comdex.

This is what makes me think that they will produce the drive only if enough industry players are willing to get behind it. I would think that while Sony might like having Iomega on their team, it would not be likely for Iomega to get involved with this. It just doesn't fit into the business plan.
