I think I see what Lane is saying on this. I just finished posting about the difference between understanding and apologizing, so have been thinking about it.

It sounded to me as if John was saying that Rev. WRight's horrible statements needed to be taken against the whole of his good works and words, and were ameliorated by them, while Duke has no redeeming value. He may not have been saying this, but that's how I read it. That seems to me to be apologist in nature, as if it offers understanding PLUS a sense of forgiveness.

IMO, these kinds of statements need to be treated as the poison they are, even if you do understand them. What the understanding does is help you deal with the behavior rationally and clearly, but not emotionally.
