>>The most interesting thing about it for me was how it was the clearest example to date of a superdelegate 'voting his conscience' without regard to other factors. Richardson didn't follow the will of the voters in his state because NM went for Hillary. And he didn't follow the will of his natural constituency, Hispanics, who are reported as disproportionately voting for Hillary.

Does Richardson's example make it difficult for pundits to make the case that the supers should vote in accordance to the will of the people?<<

Kate -

Well, you also have Teddy Kennedy and John Kerry backing Obama, though Massachussets went for Clinton. Of course, they got on board with Barack before the voters of their state had spoken.

But I think that's a very good question you're posing. I wonder whether it makes more sense for a superdelegate to consider the will of the voters nationwide, or only those of their own state.

I would say that absolutely Richardson should not base his decision on who other members of his ethnic group are supporting. But you could certainly make the argument that he should support Clinton because his state went that way.

That, of course, would mean that all the supers should decide whom to support based on how the votes went in their states. That would mean Obama would have the nomination pretty much locked up by now.
