I am reading "Murder me for Nickels" by Peter Rabe and he is everything we were told. He wrote "gangster noir" in the 50's and 60's, and it's really good. Wrote for the Gold Medal paperback house when original paperbacks were in vogue. The other two top writers there were John D McDonald and Charles Williams. I would check your library sources if I were you.
