Maybe not empires, but France, once it accepted the fact that it was no longer a major imperial world power or owner of foreign territory, has transformed itself into an efficient and increasingly wealthy country, generating much of its energy cheaply with nuclear power. Even more amazing is Ireland.

The United States has saddled itself with a very stupid government in recent years. But that may change.
