Very true! An example -- Seattle has purchased perhaps 750 million in bonds (cost... 2.5 billion over time?) for Qwest Field and Safeco Field. And now the Seattle Supersonics want to escape town unless another 250 million or so heads their way (and they received about 100 million just 10 or so years ago on a big renovation of their arena).

It's all coercive and leads to player and team wealth almost beyond belief compared to when I was a kid. A truly amazing disconnect in our society. A study in Minneapolis after their new stadium went in showed that the entire arts world suffered from the monetary drain in the years afterward.
