One problem for poker players is that you have to have enough of an edge over your opponents to overcome the tournament take or rake of the game you play in. If you are very good, that's not so hard to do. But most poker players rise to their level of incompetence trying to win more money. The other problem is that some of the very personality traits that lead to excellent poker increase the probability that you will do something that gets you busted.

I could never be a great poker player even though I think I have a very good aptitude for that kind of thing intellectually. I'm never going to be comfortable making huge bluffs or calling them when I might have a read. I'm never going to be comfortable and relaxed in higher stakes games no matter how big my bankroll and net worth. I tend to be a tense person (probably because of decades of gambling on horses, pool, stocks etc...). I'm also a much more cautious person. I want a huge edge before I play. However, I'll never rise above the level at which I have an edge and will make money every year.
