I thought a bit about you, Dale, yesterday. I'm reading Fred Kaplan's book, Daydream Believers: How a Few Grand Ideas Wrecked American Power.

I'm about halfway through and so far the central locus of the themes is the intersection of foreign policy and military might.

But he has a chapter on the Bush administration's approach to North Korea, which is easily the clearest statement I've yet read. Just how seriously screwed up the Bush approach was. It is absolutely amazing. And the fact that Powell saw it and was unable to make a difference.

He opens with a chapter on military transformation--switching to the mobile, etc. military. When tekboy posted regularly, it was one of his fetishes, so I've read this literature a bit. As have others. Though some of his information on Afghanistan is new, at least to me.

And he has a chapter now on ABM stuff, which is largely in the public domain but there are bits and pieces of new information.

You and your wife might enjoy it. At least to skim to see what portions are interestingly framed and/or offer new information.
