He's not really that old. Humans have been known to live well past their 71st birthdays. ;-)

But what would happen is that there would be a mad scramble within the Republican party. I'm sure that each of the candidates who won at least some of the primaries would make the claim that they should be the nominee, but it would ultimately be up to the delegates to choose.
