There is an ongoing debate about whether or not $VIX can be analyzed by means of TA. My conclusion - after working with this indicator closely for a number of years - is that the answer is yes.

Does it lead the price action, or does it follow? I will settle for it being a "confirming" indicator. VIX reflects an emotion which accompanies the buying and selling of OEX options. By its nature it cannot be truly "trending", but it must be closer to being an "oscillator". A change of "trend" in VIX is likely to be associated with a meaningful change in the trend of the broader markets. All imho, of course.
