Maybe not in California. But the interstate system made it possible to travel around Texas in less than days. Even so, Houston to El Paso is going to eat a big chunk out of a day and probably should be two. Texas has some population centers separated by large tracts of open land. Being able to travel from one place to another without slowing to 35 and stopping at the lights and stop signs of every tiny town makes a huge difference.

That isn't what Engine Charley said. What he actually said was "because for years I thought what was good for the country was good for General Motors and vice versa.". And that is different. Now, don't get me wrong. Charley was some piece of work. He championed the idea that the US needed a permanent war economy, for example.
