Al, the NIMBY factor is a direct result of the negative public perception created by disasters such as Chernobyl. The flames are further fanned by environmentalists who exploit these fears in opposing anything related to nuclear energy. All that contributes to the excessive cost of building and maintaining nuclear power plants. Some of those fears are justified, but most aren't.

People for some odd reason would rather deal with the pollution of a coal power plant over the remote possibility of a nuclear meltdown. Or the possibility of continued terrorism funded by oil money. All are really bad, but until we make solar and fusion economically viable (which we can achieve a generation or two from now), we really ought to focus on nuclear and coal.

At least that gets the money out of the hands of the Middle East.
