You put your money and your effort where your mouth is, and most people don't do that. I'm not as active as you. My effort is much more passive, but in my own way I try to narrow the gulf.

I'll have to think about what you said on the draft being an equalizer. I rather like the volunteer military, and it seems as though we get better results with it. Also, I sort of bristle at the idea of using the military as a social experiment. But who am I to say?

When I was growing up, the only other kid who went to Boy Scout Camp with me was a black kid. We slept in the same tent and stepped in each other's cook kits. There weren't that many black kids around then, and I couldn't see what the big problem was.

My Dad was a Southern man, but he never taught me one word of prejudice. His only thought was maybe you couldn't change people as fast as you wanted to, sort of like your long time line of events.

In a way, I think the best thing most people can do is to avoid being part of the problem. A few, like yourself, try to actively fix it. That isn't possible for most people.
