It would take quite a lot. The amount would be so high that not just the total amount but the per year interest would be in the trillions range to have something that really resembles bankruptcy. But you would have obvious problems long before you had anything that resembled bankruptcy.

And you would have it done to benefit Iraq rather than Americans?

Its not like the two are mutually exclusive. At the moment our presence in Iraq benefits both.
