I'll just comment on the volunteer part of your post. While I don't disagree with the professionalism and success of our all volunteer forces, I do worry that our armed forces are more and more resembling mercenary forces, rather than citizen forces. I worry that less and less of our government leaders have had military experience. I'd rather have folks who have "been there and done that" be the ones who decide who we're going to fight, when we're going to fight them, and for how long. I worry that we are going to pull out of Iraq just when we are on the cusp of succeeding in our arduous and heartbreaking task because too many in our Congress don't understand the first thing about our military. For this and other reasons, I still think a national draft would be invaluable, even were it to take a Constitutional amendment to effect it.
