You have a way of making me think outside the box. IMHO the founding fathers were wise to keep the federal government poor. If we repealed the Sixteenth Amendment I would agree to onerous taxes in the short run to eliminate the debt. Pass an Amendment or set of Amendments that repeals #16, and forces the federal government to have a balanced budget every year and the country would be reinvigorated. Additionally an Amendment that reduces the amount of debt the federal government could maintain by 10% per year until it were debt free would help.

I disagree with your economist relative. It is not the form of taxation that is the problem. It is the level of spending. Governments do not create wealth or help people. It is capitalism that creates wealth and it is wealth that allows societies to provide free services to those to weak willed to care for themselves.
