It would take quite a lot. The amount would be so high that not just the total amount but the per year interest would be in the trillions range to have something that really resembles bankruptcy. But you would have obvious problems long before you had anything that resembled bankruptcy.

If the US government were a company without the benefit of printing money it would probably be close to insolvency now. As it is the value of our currency, based on the "full faith and credit" of the US government relative to other currencies, is in dramatic decline.

And you would have it done to benefit Iraq rather than Americans?
