I don't see either taxes nor the draft as a necessary evil

Whether one dresses it up as patriotic duty or for whatever reason, the draft needs to be labeled for what it is.. Involuntary servitude, i.e. slavery. Your life and body become property of the State. No amount of "pretty" changes that fact. And, IMO, it's an anathema to the principles upon which this country was founded.

And as far as I'm concerned, any country that cannot drum up enough voluntary support from its citizenry to save itself from external aggression is not worth saving in the first place.

I'm not happy that the US is the "world's policeman". Let the rest of the damn world take care of itself (and pay for it as well). Our immense technical superiority and pile of nukes is sufficient to obliterate any State stupid enough to attack us. And for dealing with terrorist rabble, a smaller professional force should be more than adequate.

Conventional war is so "yesterday". I was ambivalent about getting into Iraq and I'm ambivalent about our presence there now, but I'm convinced that there were strategic and political bonehead mistakes made a plenty, both preceding and during our involvement there.

For the record, please do not consider this an anti military rant. I admire and support our troops 100% and consider them to represent some of the best of what our country's all about...
