McCain also told Michigan autoworkers that jobs may not be coming back. And told Iowa farmers that ethanol-from-corn was a bad idea. Not exactly what voters want to hear. Unless they prefer honesty. Good point. I don't agree with everything that McCain believes but I would much rather have a straight shooter that is willing to communicate honestly than have a person that just tells me what I want to hear because I might then vote for him/her. I also think that the original passage again highlighted that McCain is a real fiscal conservative. The core of being a fiscal conservative is government expense control - something GWB was never good at.
