Jim, this is some stuff I posted at DEC's group. Needless to say, I am short INTC.

INTC longs are paranoid about the DEC lawsuit. Let me give everyone my view on "war logistics" for this case. DEC is the little guy here. even if DEC were found 100% guilty of infringing the INTC patents, and the most severe penalties are imposed (i.e., back royalty payments, fines etc. for the future, use DEC could just stop using the technology related to this patents. Bottom line: DEC does not have much so it can't loose much).

Now let's take a look at MAMA Intel, they are in clear violation of critical patents needed for Intel's huge volume of old (Pentium) and coming (Merced) products. DEC's position: WE WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO USE OUR TECHNOLOGY! STOP USING IT! AND PAY US ROYALTIES AND FINES FOR ALL THE STUFF ALREADY OUT THERE!

Even though there is significant room for negotiation you do not need to be a computer scientist to see that this is going to cost INTC some very big bucks!

Any views for/against my own?
