so yes, the more people in the dem ranks, especially if they are there because the religious right bugs them, the more the reps will have to tack to the center, and away from the religious right.

Is that the way it works? I suppose it theoretically could. I don't think I've ever seen a study of what provokes folks to register with a party. But if there were one, I don't know that the other guys would respond as you said. They might just dig in.
