It's not academic if it saves us from making a mistake next time. Perhaps it was extremely unpopular and unpolitical because it was hasty and wrong. Sometimes when everyone is annoyed with you about a decision, it's because you screwed up. I'm not sure bad decisions are always emblematic of character and honesty- although I suppose occasionally they might be. Doubt it's the case in this instance. I think we're all aware you see character and honesty- but the people who agree with you are an ever shrinking minority, and I think you should get prepared for the possibility that your man Bush will look pretty bad when history comes to judge him.
