re: "AFAIK, nobody is claiming that any specific fossil species from 1.9 mya is likely to be in our linage. Yet this guy speculates on a cascaded sequence of behavioral changes that he thinks drove reduced dimorphism in our actual ancestors and attributes it all to cooking? This guy is amazing!"

Yes, he is amazing. That is why other scientists don't consider him a crank or his theory stupid. That is why other scientists have spent time conducting research and published peer review papers supporting aspects of his theory. And yes, he is still at Harvard, and I'm sure a prized faculty member (according to wikipedia, he has been made the House Master of one of Harvard's residential houses). His paper does address tools - he states that tools have been used since ~2.5mya (half a million years before man really walked upright, before females got bigger, before teeth got alot smaller). And since he is an expert on Chimps, he knows that chimps use tools.

Oh, I think I found someone claiming that around 1.9mya there was specific fossil species in our linage.
