Larry-funny article "101 uses for a dead network computer" but appears erroneous data regards IBM getting out of NC business.
Believe IBM has indicated it will not participate in the NetPC, which is quite different from the NC. Many are confused on this issue. Unless very recent data supercedes, IBM appears to be expanding its efforts into NCs and these are Java based NCs. Please correct if you have more recent data.
The trend toward object oriented distributed computing appears irreversible. Java is a very good implementation of this model. This irreversible trend appears to be a driver for the NC model.
An item of interest in post 2 is: infoworld.com "Toshiba to ship Java-based network computers" Note that Toshiba is one of the leading brand names in notebooks currently. And they are shipping a desktop and mobile NC, per above URL.
Also, as I posted in reply 2, the NC model comes in many variations, only one of which is a desktop model. It appears even larger potential is Internet Appliance type of NC(smaller, cheaper, specialized).
In addition, some observers have noted that when a new technology is introduced, it takes about two years before the new methodology needed for full implementation is embraced. In other words, we try to use old methods on new technology for about two years, then the lights start coming on. Java is a little over two years old and the NC is approaching this age. New technology and new methodology should start coming together soon, if this thesis is correct.
Larry, thanks for the fun article.
