the downside might be that its easier for petty thieves to get into your place. although i guess tx is pretty friendly when it comes to shooting prowlers. btw something similar happened to me in nyc many years ago. i came home from a movie with my wife and saw official vehicles parked across the street and recognized neighbors waiting outside. turned out we had a drug dealer in our building who lived on the second floor. someone had killed him and then set fire to his apartment. Not sure why because a passer by saw the flames from the window and rushed in to try to help. my apartment which was on the 5th floor smelled of smoke for a week but was not damaged.
