Perhaps, or perhaps her lawyer screwed up.

Her husband actually divorced her in order to get her medicaid/medicare benefits from what I read.

That complicates things. I wonder what she did, then, with the settlement money. She wouldn't qualify for Medicaid if she still had it. And Walmart can't get it back from her if she doesn't have it. I think there's more to this than we know.

As for Walmart, I don't think they should penalize the rest of the pool over this by paying the bills. If they feel the need to chip in and pay those bills to avoid the bad publicity, they should give it as a charitable donation from other funds.
