Earnings below estimates, I think this is pretty significant in the short term, Intel screwed up the MMX intro and I hope that the PII cycle is executed better. I agree with the posts earlier that Intel either needs to pick up volume sales to offset lower ASP or else sell higher priced chips. Economic reality of the marketplace rules against the latter. I look for trade in 80-84 range in the morning. Hope that buyers step in to fill the void. Lot of people won't have a high tolerance for disappointment on the down side. I personally think that Intel's hopes in the next year rest squarely on PII efficient manufacturing (if that can be done). Merced is important, but like the PII it will be a money drain at first(one I am sure Intel will more than recoup). In the interim the strategy has to focus on Pentium II pricing and marketing. A couple of months ago a few people were saying that Intel must defend the low end of the price range. Its true. There has to be a viable Intel chip at the low end (i.e 200 Mhz MMX). Don't laugh, thats the low end now if INtel is to fight off the likes of AMD, Cyrix and this new C6 clone that is hitting the wires today. Intel seems to recognize this economic reality but the transition to new products when the alternative choices are cheaper is a tough one. Anyway, I'm through spouting for now, I like Intel at the 80-84 buck price.

Think Forward,

Chuckie
