I would suggest that it is not the case that NG plants are being chosen in the affirmative sense, rather they are being forced as a default position.

Take this as anecdotal, but as close to as being written in stone as possible:

1) We will have carbon mitigation, and it will be the much more overhead intensive (trading costs) cap and trade method, and

2) Banks simply won't finance a new coal plant because of all the environmental uncertainty.

Trust me. I have been to too many conferences in Washington to believe anything different. In my opinion it is stupid and economic suicide, but that is where the US is going - on any number of fronts (eg FED bailing out Bear - or letting Bear get into that position to begin with).

Bought calls on CHK, DVN and CNQ recently. Still holding my Jan '10 PTEN LEAPS - very sweet. Bought puts against Citi and Lehman this AM. Lots of well founded press that they will be forced to cut their dividends to zero.
