A mid-major is a Division 1 school that's not part of one of the "major" conferences (SEC, ACC, Big East, etc), but rather a notch down (A-10, MAC, C-USA, etc). It's a term I hear all the time on sports radio around here (greater NY area) but I'm not sure how widespread it is elsewhere.
