I agree with you on this point. If someone follows Brinker, and he misses the bear, he shouldn't get a pass because "nobody saw it coming." First of all, there were people that saw this decline coming. I think Bob simply did not do a good job of estimating the amount of earnings write-downs as a result of the entire subprime debacle. I think he also was way off on his prediction for economic growth. And if you are following Brinker, he doesn't shy away from blasting those he disagrees with. Bob was very adamant last fall when he thought those calling for a recession were alarmists. When you are in the forecasting business, it is proper to be critical when someone misunderstands the data,just as it is proper to be complimentary when someone interprets the data correction going forward. - David
