Considering you only need 5 or 6 good players to have a good basketball team it seems the label mid-major is a misnomer.

I've heard the term applied to schools without a division 1 football team. Then you'd have to put Georgetown, Villanova, Marquette, Western Kentucky, Penn, George Mason... All final 4 teams as some lesser ranking teams. No wonder ADs from "mid-majors" hate the term.

If any team should be considered a mid major by definition it should be Duke. Their football team couldn't have a winning record in Division II.
