(Garmin needs to enter this business too, but they'll need to know how to create servers.)
DeCarta To Introduce Two-Way, Real-Time LBS Mar 25, 2008 - GPS World
Location-based services (LBS) software supplier deCarta said today that it is rolling out its real-time, two-way connected navigation service for next-generation personal navigation devices (PNDs) and smartphones in the third quarter of this year.
With the system, real-time location-aware content is sent to and from a device on demand, enabling the user to access dynamic information including Internet local searches, traffic, weather, optimized driving directions and routes, points of interest and other pertinent location-based services, according to deCarta. The initial service offering will include LBS embedded-device software and server technology from deCarta, wireless data service from Jasper Wireless, SiRFInstantFix GPS technology, dynamic traffic from INRIX, and live local weather data from WeatherBug.
DeCarta supports content from all leading map-data suppliers and will extend that breadth of capability through its connected navigation service, the company said. Internet search is enabled through deCarta's proxy server.
"Efficiently managing and searching dynamic location-based data, and delivering consumer-relevant content requires tremendous expertise in geospatial server and mobile technology," said J. Kim Fennell, president and CEO of deCarta. "This plays to all of our core strengths and strong partnerships that have historically allowed deCarta to serve some of the world's most successful LBS providers."
DeCarta cited data from market research firm ABI Research, which estimates that by 2012, more than 62 percent of all navigation devices will feature real-time, two-way connectivity, with nearly 170 million such units shipping worldwide.
