It is interesting that Iraq chose now to start the conflict. If they pull back and reach an impass with Sadr or other militias it will project weakness or the national government and adversely affect the moral of the Iraqi troops.

I agree that wholesale civil war in Iraq would help the dark forces that want to blemish America's military. A little bit of conflict that originated as the Iraqi military cracking down on armed militias operating openly should not harm American popular opinion if the people know the facts.

Senator McCain is helped by the Iraqis impeding the open display of militia force.
