10/8/97 Shares Of Viatel Inc. Jump; Analyst Says Stock Is Undervalued

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Shares of long-distance telecommunications company Viatel Inc. gained Wednesday, prompting one analyst to suggest investors are finally giving the company its due.
"People are realizing this company represents incredible value," noted Salomon Brothers Inc. analyst Andrew Harrington.
"This company has performed on every quarter for the last several quarters," he added. "It hasn't disappointed. It's getting customers like crazy and it's massively oversold. It's still massively oversold in my view."
Salomon Brothers was lead underwriter of Viatel's initial public offering in October 1996.
In Wednesday trading, Viatel's (VYTL) shares were up 75 cents, or 12%, at $7 on Nasdaq volume of more than 1.4 million,several times its average daily volume of 58,000.
