You're correct. Home builders are selling their high-basis land.

Each project is one entity. FIFO or LIFO, and cost allocation rules, have to be applied consistently within a project.

But when you sell the entire project the entire cost basis goes with it.

But apart from this, Centex needs money quite badly.
