It certainly appears to be changing the picture. It's in Cyrix/NSM, AMD, and IDT's best interest to let the compatibility be handled through the glue of Microsoft's DirectX software layer. Maybe this has something to do with the reported architectual issues dispute between Intel and Microsoft. Intel wants to co-opt more of the multimedia and system interconnect design to be their proprietary play thing reagardless of it being the most feasible technical architecure. Microsoft doesn't want to lose control of the OS marketplace as it merges with consumer audio & video capabilities and confronts Java. Who do you think is going to WIN this argument?

I think that the greater "value proposition" will WIN out. Cyrix, AMD and IDT will offer a host of creative products targeted toward existing and emerging segments of the market and that can deliver as good or better performance than chip architectures that are horn-shoed into an Intel proprietary form factor. Microsoft WINs and Cyrix, AMD and IDT WIN(Chip). Intel's market share and margins errode on desktop and laptop chips but they prosper on workstation, server, networking gear, FLASH memory, and gains against applications in mini and mainframe systems and other products.
